Description
We are an existing Ohio Century Farm in Hamilton County, west of Cincinnati that is quickly expanding, moving from conventional crops to horse boarding, vegetable production, small grains, and honey production.
We currently have a 2/3 acre under intense production designed to be scalable. The system focus on a high rotation of greens (salad, kale, swiss chard, mustarads), root crops (main radish and carrots), and beans. We also have an herb garden that is producing hundreds of pounds of fresh herbs. It is our intent to move this small operation to a new plot of two acres with the use of rolling high tunnels to rotate crops better. As of June 16, 2012 we have produced nearly a half ton of greens, with half of that being mixed salad greens.
Our number of bee hives place us as the largest bee keeping operation in Hamilton County and the second largest in Southwestern, Ohio. We produced two tons of honey in 2011 and hope to have that up to three tons this year.
We are planting eight acres of buckwheat and three acres of heirloom corn. We are purchasing soft-read wheat from our neighbor and milling all three grains into a total of six products.
We supply the following retailers (selection of our products vary widely): Biggs, Bridgetown Finer Meats, Green BEAN Delivery, Merrilee's Hardware, Park +Vine, Picnic & Pantry, Whole Foods Market.
We supply the following restaurants: Bouquet, Local 127, Melt, Nectar, Nicholson's Gastro Pub, Om Cafe, Orchids at Palm Court, The Palace.
We use Tiny Footprint Delivery for help in local distribution.
We have won the 2012 and 2013 Edible Ohio Valley Local Hero Award and the 2012 American Treasures Award. Our Garden Manager appears regularly on "In The Garden With Ron Wilson" on 550 AM radio (and satellite radio) giving organic methods of growing a voice. In September of 2012 she will be honored as a key figure in Women In Farming in Ohio by Grailville Farm and Green Umbrella. Kate's article on Companion Planting recently appeared in OEFFA's recent newsletter.
This year we will be participating for our fourth OEFFA's Ohio Sustainable Farm Tour.
